TYPE 87 SPH - JAPAN GROUND SELF DEFENSE FORCE ANTI AIRCRAFT GUN
Description: The Type 87 self-propelled anti-aircraft gun was developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in the mid 80s. This SPAAG has much in common with the German Gepard. The Type 87 replaced the ageing M42 Duster SPAAGs, provided by the USA. Some sources claim that the JGSDF currently operates 41 of these anti-aircraft systems.
The Type 87 is fitted with twin fully-stabilized Oerlikon GDF 35-mm guns. These guns were license-produced in Japan. Rate of fire for a single gun is 550 rounds per minute. The Type 87 fires armor-piercing-incendiary and armor-piercing rounds. Maximum effective range against air targets is 4 km. Vehicle can fire accurately on the move.
The Type 87 SPAAG is fitted with modern fire control system. Vehicle is fitted with surveillance and tracking radars, friend-or-foe identification system.
Armor of the Type 87 provides protection against heavy machine guns and artillery shell splinters. Front arc can not be penetrated by small bore cannons. Vehicle is fitted with NBC protection and automatic fire suppression systems.
Vehicle has a crew of three, including commander, gunner and driver.
The Type 87 uses modified chassis of the Type 74 main battle tank. Vehicle is powered by Mitsubishi 10ZF diesel engine, developing 750 horsepower.
