McLaren had already been thinking in terms of a double diffuser and completely rebuilt the rear of the Formula 1 car with a view to perfecting the aerodynamics. So now a long fin extends from the bonnet to the rear wing and the side pods that come together behind the cockpit despite a tank with a 160 litre volume are considerably narrower.
