Description: The C-17 Globemaster is one of the most modern Strategic Long-Range Transport aircraft. It has been in service with the USAF since 1993. It is capable of transporting troop contingents and up to 77 tons of freight to all Aviation Bases world-wide. Apart from its world-wide supply flights the C-17 is indispensable in the Medivac Role from the Iraq and Afghanistan theatre’s of war. Plans to replace the C-130 and later the C-141 originated as early as the 70’s. In 1981, McDonnell Douglas was awarded the design contract. The prototype flew on its maiden flight on 15 September 1991. It entered service with the USAF on 14 July 1993. The C-17’s long-range flight and STOL (Short Take-off and Landing) capability on provisional airstrips make it an ideal transport medium for military, humanitarian and peace keeping missions. Initially the Royal Air Force received four C-17’s in 2001. In the meantime it has seven aircraft in service. Qatar Airways also ordered the C-17 for use in the Heavy Lift Sector and it has been in service since 2008.
