I-400 IMPERIAL JAPANESE NAVY 1945
Description : The Sen Toku I-400-class submarines of the Imperial Japanese Navy were the largest submarines of World War II, and remained the largest ever built prior to the development of nuclear ballistic missile submarines in the 1960s. They were submarine aircraft carriers able to carry 3 Aichi M6A Seiran aircraft underwater to their destinations. They were designed to surface, launch the planes then dive again quickly before they were discovered. They also carried torpedoes for close range combat.
The I-400 class was designed with the range to travel anywhere in the world and return. A fleet of 19 boats was planned in 1942, and work started on the first in January 1943 at the Kure, Hiroshima arsenal. Within a year the plan was scaled back to five, of which only three (I-400 at Kure, and I-401 and I-402 at Sasebo) were completed.
First operations were planned for 1945 including an attack of the Panama canal which never occured due to the end of the war.

IMPERIAL JAPANESE NAVY BATTLESHIP "MUTSU"
Description : She was the Imperial Japanese Navy’s second Nagato class battleship, laid down at the Yokosuka Naval Arsenal on 1 June 1918, launched on 31 May 1920, and completed on 24 October 1921. Mutsu sailed with the Yamato, Nagato, Hosho, Sendai, nine destroyers and four auxiliary ships as Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto’s Main Body during the Battle of Midway in June 1942.
Mutsu suffered a catastrophic explosion in the number 3 ammunition magazine 3km North of the present-day Mutsu Memorial on Oshima Island, on 8 June 1943. Although the direct cause of the explosion was never substantiated, it was ruled by the Japanese Government as "human interference". The explosion was so severe that it instantly sheared the stern from the ship forward of turret 3, causing major flooding in the boiler rooms and main engine room. The 535-foot (163 m) front section of the ship rolled to starboard and sank almost instantly resulting in the loss of over 1,100 officers and men, including 140 instructors and cadets from an aviation training group on a familiarization tour. The stern upended and remained floating for nearly 12 hours before coming to rest just a few hundred feet south of the main wreck. Only 350 survivors were recovered.
The Japanese fleet was quickly mobilized and combed the small bay for enemy ships or submarines but came up empty. After a coverup operation was launched, and all hope of raising Mutsu was abandoned, the precious fuel-oil was pumped out and ammunition was recovered. Mutsu remained untouched for 25 years.

FOUR-MASTED BARQUENTINE "ESMERALDA"
Description : Esmeralda is a steel-hulled four-masted barquentine tall ship of the Chilean Navy and currently the second tallest and longest sailing ship in the world.
Since her commissioning, Esmeralda has been a training ship for the Chilean Navy. She has visited more than 300 ports worldwide acting as a floating embassy for Chile. She participated in Operation Sail at New York in 1964, 1976 and 1986, and the Osaka World Sail in 1983. She also participated in International Regattas of Sail in 1964, 1976, 1982 and 1990 winning the coveted Cutty Sark Trophy in the last two participations.
Reports from Amnesty International, the US Senate and Chilean Truth and Reconciliation Commission describe the ship as a kind of a floating jail and torture chamber for political prisoners of the Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship from 1973 to 1980. It is claimed that probably over a hundred persons were kept there at times and subjected to hideous treatment among them the British priest Miguel Woodward

IMPERIAL JAPANESE NAVY CRUISER "CHOKAI" 1944
Description : Chokai was a Takao-class heavy cruiser, armed with ten 8" guns, four 4.7" guns, height torpedo tubes and assorted anti-aircraft guns. Chokai was designed with the Imperial Japanese Navy strategy of the great "Decisive Battle" in mind, and built in 1932 by Mitsubishi’s shipyard in Nagasaki. At the start of the Pacific War, the Chokai supported the invasion of Malaya and participated in the pursuit of the Royal Navy’s battleship Force Z. By mid-July 1942, the Chōkai was the new flagship of Vice Admiral Mikawa Gunichi and his Eighth Fleet. On 7 August 1942, with Guadalcanal having been invaded by the Americans, the Chōkai headed for the Guadalcanal waters, with Vice Admiral Mikawa aboard. In the battle of Savo Island Mikawa’s squadron of heavy cruisers inflicted a devastating defeat on an Allied squadron, sinking four heavy cruisers (three American and one Australian) and damaging other ships. However, the Chokai sustained several hits from the cruisers Quincy and Astoria. By 25th October 1944 off the Philippines Islands, she took part to the huge Battle of Leyte Gulf. During the engagement, the Chokai was hit amidships, on the starboard side, by torpedoes from the US destroyer escort Samuel B. Roberts. A series of hits from Roberts’s pair of 5-inch guns inflicted damage to her bridge and forward gun turret. Then, a secondary explosion, caused by the damage to the armed torpedoes on her decks, knocked out her engines and rudder. The Chokai promptly dropped out of formation, unable to continue.
Within minutes, an American warplane dropped a 500-lb (227 kg) bomb onto the Chokai’s forward machinery room. Fires began to rage around the Chokai, and she went dead in the water. Later on that day, she was scuttled by torpedoes from the Japanese destroyer Fujinami, which also rescued some of her crew. Two days later the Fujinami was itself sunk with the loss of all hands, including the survivors from Chokai, which makes Chokai one of the largest vessels to be sunk with all hands aboard during World War II.

THREE-MAST FULL-RIGGED SHIP "AMERIGO VESPUCCI"
Description : The Amerigo Vespucci is a tall ship of the Marina Militare, named after the explorer Amerigo Vespucci. Her home port is Livorno, Italy. As of 2008 she is still in use as a school ship.
In 1925, the Regia Marina ordered two school ships to be built following a design by Lieutenant Colonel Francesco Rotundi of the Italian Navy Engineering Corps, inspired by the style of large late 18th century 74-cannon ships of the line. The first of these two ships, the Cristoforo Colombo, was put into service in 1928 and was used by the Italian Navy until 1943. After World War II, this ship was handed over to the USSR as part of the war reparations and was shortly afterwards decommissioned.
The vessel is a full rigged three masted steel hull 82.4 m (270.34 ft) long, with an overall length of 101 m (331 ft) including the bowsprit and a maximum width of 15.5 m (51 ft). She has a draught of about 7 metres (23 ft) and a displacement at full load of 4146 tons. Under auxiliary diesel-electric propulsion power, the Amerigo Vespucci reaches a top speed of 10 knots and has an autonomy of 5450 nm (at 6.5 knots).

GERMAN MARINE THREE-MAST BARK "GORCH FOCK"
Description : The Gorch Fock is a tall ship of the German Navy (Deutsche Marine). She is the second ship of that name and a sister ship of the Gorch Fock built in 1933. Both ships are named in honor of the German writer Johann Kinau who wrote under the pseudonym "Gorch Fock" and died in the battle of Jutland/Skagerrak in 1916. The modern-day Gorch Fock was built in 1958 and has since then undertaken 146 cruises (as of October 2006), including one tour around the world in 1988. She is sometimes referred to (unofficially) as the Gorch Fock II to distinguish her from her older sister ship.
